Artist, Make Tax Season Less Taxing on You!

Workshop presented by the Mountain BizWorks’ Artist Alliance

(Asheville, NC)  Do I consider my art a hobby or a business?  Do I even have to file?  What can I deduct?  What kind of records should I keep?  How do I know what to take to my Accountant/CPA?  On Wednesday, December 10th Mountain BizWorks’ Artist Alliance will host Artist, Make Tax Season Less Taxing on You! from 6-8 pm at Mountain BizWorks located at 153 S. Lexington Ave.

She will explain these concepts in simple terms with examples specific to artists. Sue will help show you how to take the mystery and fear out of doing a small business tax return for artists.

Sue Sevcik, MBA, has been preparing taxes for artists and others.  She also works as a professional glass artist, selling her work at shows and festivals, over the last 11 years. Sue worked for H&R Block for 10 years and spent 16 years as a Business Planner for IBM.

Asheville Jazz Orchestra!!

AJO Plays on stage at The Rocket Club on Haywood Road in West Asheville

AJO Plays on stage at The Rocket Club on Haywood Road in West Asheville

Did you know that on Monday nights at the Rocket Club in West Asheville you can hear a 17-piece big band orchestra?  Me neither, but Monday night was a treat!

Since their founding in 2006 the 17 piece Asheville Jazz Orchestra has become western North Carolina’s premier big band.  Their mission is twofold.  First, through recreating the swing era hits of the 1930s and 1940s the AJO strives to rekindle an awareness of this rich and innovative jazz style.  Secondly, the AJO considers it vital to help the big band tradition evolve through performing works by contemporary composers and arrangers.  Whether they’re playing your favorite big band era hits at their monthly swing dance or performing a brand new composition written by a band member in a formal concert, the AJO is dedicated to both preserving and advancing the uniquely American art form of jazz.

Remembrance of things past: AIDS Memorial Quilt (source: MountainX)

Remember AIDS?

Though supplanted in the public eye by the latest disease du jour, there was a time in the ‘80s and ‘90s when you couldn’t turn around without seeing or hearing something about AIDS—which first targeted gay men yet quickly went global. Besides sparking the fear and loathing of whole classes of people, the plague also spurred cadres of dedicated men and women to devote their lives to eradicating it.

Power trio: Local World AIDS Day coordinator Pam Siekman, seen here with Ron Curran (left) and Harry Brown of the WNC AIDS Project, is the person responsible for bringing portions of the AIDS Memorial Quilt to Asheville. “It’s going to be powerful,” says Siekman. Photos By Jonathan Welch

But the sheer magnitude of the AIDS epidemic manifested itself in other ways as well, some of them quite positive and life-affirming. Proving that beauty can spring from ugliness, the disease inspired artists in many media, from the iconic drawings of the late Keith Haring to popular music, major motion pictures, plays and fiction.

But perhaps the era’s quintessential icon is the 1,293,300-square-foot AIDS Memorial Quilt, housed and overseen by the Atlanta-based Names Project Foundation. And while the dread disease has largely receded from the nation’s consciousness, the quilt not only endures but continues to grow.

Leading Ladies Runs January 16 – February 1, 2009: In this hilarious comedy by the author of Moon Over Buffalo, two English Shakespearean actors, Jack and Leo, find themselves so down on their luck that they are performing “Scenes from Shakespeare” on the Moose Lodge circuit in the Amish country of Pennsylvania. When they hear that an old lady in a nearby town is about to die and leave her fortune to her two long lost English nephews, they resolve to pass themselves off as her beloved relatives and get the cash. The trouble is, the relatives aren’t nephews, but nieces!  Starring Shirley Cohen and Steve Wilde.  Performances Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 pm, Sunday afternoons at 2:30 pm at Asheville Community Theatre.  Tickets range from $12-$22.
